In the world of advertising, the lines between reality and digital creativity are becoming increasingly blurred. Black Box Productions recently pushed those boundaries further with the launch of a TV commercial featuring a live-action NHL player and an AI-generated cow. The ad for La Belle et La Boeuf, takes inspiration from a western stand-off, but with a twist. What follows is the story of how this project came together and lessons learned about working with this emerging technology.
In September, La Belle et La Boeuf approached us to produce two 30-second broadcast campaigns for the NHL hockey season. The first campaign, featuring Arber Xhekaj, is showcased in our blog post. While the final campaign highlights an NHL player, the original concept started in a completely different direction.
When we first began developing concepts for La Belle et La Boeuf’s commercials, one idea stood out as both whimsical and wildly ambitious: what if we put a real cow in the restaurant? It struck the right balance between humor and surprise, aligning perfectly with the playful tone of the brand. Initially, we envisioned a quirky take on Beauty and the Beef, featuring Belle (a character from the brand's social media) falling for her bovine Prince Charming.
However, the realities of bringing a cow to set quickly turned this dream into a logistical impossibility. From professional animal trainers to specialized transport and safety precautions, the costs alone would have consumed the entire budget. As much as we loved the idea, it simply wasn’t feasible for that first campaign.
Instead, we pivoted to a new storyline featuring Arber Xhekaj that showcased a Western-inspired commercial introducing the Sheriff Burger. For the second spot, our client outlined two objectives: continue the western themed series featuring Arber and promote the new Buffalo Burger. With the idea of incorporating a cow lingering from the initial brainstorm, inspiration struck when we realized if a live cow wasn’t possible, why not create a standoff between Arber and an animated cow rival. This could continue to promote Arber’s Sheriff burger and introduce the new Buffalo Burger.
This marked the beginning of our journey integrating AI video animation into our production process. AI gave us the freedom to experiment with various cow designs, from photo realistic to stylized, while maintaining the comedic tone that was essential to the story. By digitally generating the cow, we avoided the logistical and budgetary constraints of working with a live animal (not to mention animal welfare concerns) while keeping the element of surprise intact.
AI played a pivotal role in bringing our AI cow concept to life, offering key advantages that made it the perfect fit for this campaign:
By embracing AI for this project, we didn’t just create a visually striking campaign; we crafted an experience that’s surprising, innovative, and undeniably shareable.
The Steps Behind Bringing the AI Cow to Life
Bringing an AI character to life is a complex process that involves multiple stages of creativity, experimentation, and refinement. Here’s how we transformed the concept of the AI cow into a memorable campaign:
The journey began with crafting a visual identity for the cow. Using MidJourney, an AI image generator, we explored countless iterations, tweaking characteristics to fit the narrative. The goal was to create a cow with personality—a playful, slightly messy character with buffalo sauce dripping from his mouth and a hockey jersey that fit with the theme of the campaign and brand identity.
2. Tackling the Uncanny Valley
One of the biggest challenges was avoiding the “uncanny valley” effect, where hyper-realistic designs can become unsettling. We embraced a more cartoony yet detailed design for the cow. By stepping away from strict realism, we unlocked greater creative freedom, pushing the boundaries of what could be achieved beyond simply filming with an actual cow.
We carefully refined details like fur texture and facial expressions, experimenting with various designs to strike a balance between realism and surreal charm. This approach maintained a comedic tone while ensuring the character felt authentic within its environment.
3. Animation and Integration
Once the design was finalized, we moved on to animating the cow. Several generative video platforms— Runway ML, OpenAI’s SORA, Kling AI, PIKA Labs, and MiniMax—were tested. Kling AI v1.6 delivered the most convincing results for image-to-video animation.
The process wasn’t without challenges. Initial attempts produced movements that didn’t align with real-world physics, requiring numerous iterations. Through testing and fine-tuning, we achieved fluid, believable motion that seamlessly integrated with the live-action setting.
4. Enhancing Quality with Upres
To ensure the highest visual quality, the animated clips were processed through Topaz Video AI, a tool that sharpens resolution and enhances detail. This step added a refined touch, ensuring every frame of the cow animation looked its best.
5. Compositing the Final Scene
With the cow animated, the next step was compositing. With the final composition and lighting in mind we filmed live-action footage featuring the restaurant and NHL player Arber Xhekaj. Then, using Adobe After Effects, we integrated the AI-generated cow with the live-action footage. This phase required careful layering of elements to create a cohesive and convincing final product, ensuring seamless interaction between the cow and the real world environment.
6. Fine-Tuning and Testing
Experimenting with AI inevitably leads to unexpected results, and this project was no exception. From erratic movements to amusing glitches, the process was filled with moments of trial and error. Each “mistake” provided valuable insights, helping us refine the animation and integration for the final cut.
Through persistence, creativity, and a willingness to embrace the quirks of AI, we brought the AI cow to life—delivering a character that was both endearing and memorable, perfectly aligning with the campaign’s playful spirit.
The final commercial integrates live-action footage and AI-generated elements seamlessly. The result is a highly engaging ad that feels both familiar and innovative. The AI cow not only delivers the “beef” of the story but also grabs attention with its surprising and unique presence, making it stand out from the other commercials. It’s designed to evoke a reaction, create the element of surprise, and leave a lasting impression for a truly memorable campaign. This project marks an exciting milestone in the world of advertising, where AI technology can complement traditional film production to create something fresh and entertaining. While the use of AI in advertising is still a relatively new concept, it opens up possibilities for brands to experiment with new creative avenues that would otherwise be too expensive or impractical to execute.
The Future of AI in Advertising
This project is just the beginning of how AI can be leveraged in video production. As AI technology continues to evolve, we expect to see more ads blending the physical and digital worlds, offering brands endless possibilities for creativity.
